Oral Appliance Therapy

For treating mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring, the custom-made mandibular repositioning appliance, or MRA, works to open the patient’s airway by moving the jaw and tongue forward, thus increasing muscle tone in the soft palate and providing a better night’s sleep.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has concluded that Oral Appliance Therapy should be the first line of treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. As an easy to wear appliance, once the MRA brings the jaw forward, the patient’s throat is opened and the interior muscles are stretched to stiffen the soft palette. This treatment option helps patients achieve results with relatively minor lifestyle adjustments. Additionally, custom made oral appliances have also been shown to be effective in reducing or eliminating snoring.

Remember, the first step to getting help for obstructive sleep apnea is to undergo an overnight sleep study that will determine the severity of your condition. This will provide an experienced and specially trained sleep physician with the necessary data to recommend therapy options that can get you on your way to a better night’s sleep.
